Massage Therapy

BodyFit massage therapists are highly trained and hold New York State licenses. They work closely with your physical therapist to tailor safe and effective treatments, whether you are recovering from injury or suffering from chronic pain.

Our massage therapists have extensive experience in a variety of techniques, including Thai, Swedish, medical, and pregnancy massage. Please ask your therapist about their specific specialties.

Thai Massage

BodyFit Thai MassageA unique form of bodywork that incorporates Hatha yoga, acupressure, and reflexology. Unlike the continuous strokes of Swedish massage, the Thai method uses point pressure, muscle stretching, and compression applied in a flowing manner.

Observing a skilled Thai massage practitioner is like watching a dance! The technique is done on a mat on the floor, you remain fully clothed, and no oils are required.

Swedish (Western) Massage

BodyFit Swedish MassageThis style of traditional massage was introduced to the U.S. in the 1800’s by two New York physicians, based on techniques developed in Sweden (where it is known as “classic massage”).

You are unclothed, but well draped, and the practitioner works directly on the skin employing long flowing strokes or kneading with the use of oil or cream. Our therapists often integrate other techniques into your treatment, including deep tissue work, trigger point (or neuromuscular) massage, and myofascial release, depending on their training and your needs.

Medical Massage

BodyFit Medical MassageMedical massage is performed with the intent of improving illnesses or injuries that have been diagnosed by a physician.

Your therapist uses a wide variety of techniques including those discussed under Swedish massage but may also incorporate some Thai style stretches. All treatment is focused on alleviating your specific symptoms. People with both acute and chronic pain conditions can benefit from this therapy.

Pregnancy Massage

BodyFit Pregnancy MassageOur massage therapists have advanced training in working with clients who are pregnant. They understand a pregnant woman’s specific needs and the correct way to position her during massage. They are also well aware of the pressure points to avoid during pregnancy.

Studies indicate that massage during pregnancy can reduce swelling, improve sleep, relieve muscle and joint pain, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health. If you are considering massage treatments during pregnancy, please discuss it in advance with your OB/GYN.
