What Is Yoga?

Yoga originated in India over 5,000 years ago but is now practiced extensively throughout the world. A 2008 study by the Yoga Journal estimated that 15.8 million Americans practice yoga.

What are some of the benefits of Yoga? Through exercise, breathing, and meditation, yoga unites the body, mind, and spirit to create inner harmony. Yoga has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety and “quiet the mind.” In this way, it can help alleviate chronic pain conditions. Yoga practice enhances general well-being by improving circulation, digestion, and glandular activity. Yoga can be particularly beneficial to your musculoskeletal system.

BodyFit PTYou might already be aware that yoga can be a good way to increase your flexibility, but did you know that it can also improve your strength?

Yoga focuses on developing a balance between strength and flexibility. Professional athletes, including football and baseball players, often incorporate yoga into their training regimens. Since yoga uses weight-bearing postures, it can also help prevent osteoporosis.
